Bettendorf fitness fan leads community push-up effort.
By Joe Hutter.
John Morrow is attempting a push-up record in May. A social worker, a retired police officer, a PhD, a plumber, a U.S. Army Reserve sergeant and Bettendorf’s own black belt and world record holder invite you to join them for a lunch hour of push-ups. An hour of what? John Morrow, 58, of Bettendorf, hosts the Hour of Power event at noon every Friday at Morrow’s Academy, 1321 5th Ave., Moline. “Each person finds his or her own number,” Morrow said. “It’s about how many push-ups you can do per minute for an hour.” Morrow’s number is 41. (Others in the group range from 4 to 18 push-ups per minute.) Morrow is out to set a world record for the most pushups by a group of people in one place in one hour — an event scheduled May 1 at St. Ambrose University called Push-ups for Peace. “The Hour of Power” began as our way to prepare for Push-ups for Peace” Morrow said. “But we are having so much fun as a group, we decided to do it every Friday at lunchtime just for fun. We play classic rock from The Doors to The Beatles and have a great time. We’re inviting people to join us and find their own personal power number.” Known as “the village people,” Morrow’s group of five includes Jeanette Gibson, a social worker; Ian Fink, retired Bettendorf police officer; Dr. Dustin Derby from the Palmer College of Chiropractic; John Olvera, a plumber; and Sgt. Terry Timmons, U.S. Army Reserve. In addition to the group record attempt, Morrow is attempting to break a world record set by England’s Paddy O’Boyle. O’Boyle holds the record of doing 1,940 pushups on his wrists in one hour. Morrow is shooting for 2,000. Morrow is fasting 40 days to get mentally and physically ready. Barkley’s Photo and Sands Production will be there to document the record. You can read more about his fitness regimen and fasting at morrowsacademy. blogspot.com. “I’m doing this whole thing to bring to light how important fitness is and to help charity,” he said. Spectators can attend Push-ups for Peace at 2:30 p.m. May 1 in Lee Loman Arena at St. Ambrose University. The entry fee is $1 or 2 non-perishable food items that will go to the Word of Life Food Pantry, Rock Island. The Quad-City Morning Optimist Club is helping John, and all proceeds will go to Kids Against Hunger and for Quad-City Children’s Therapy Center, Moline.
